On April 27, the APREMA association (Action pour la Protection et la Restauration des Mangroves) received a visit from Cynthia TUWA TANGMO (setec Afrique), the patron of its project supported by the setec Foundation. The aim of the project is the participative rehabilitation of 6 hectares of mangroves in Douala, Cameroon. It also involves training local residents in income-generating activities as an alternative to mangrove timber harvesting. Cynthia was welcomed to Douala IIIe (Japoma) for this second objective.

The visit took place in several stages:

  • Arrival and visit: Cynthia was welcomed by the association’s president, Christel BOUM, and shown around the project site;
  • Hands-on training: Cynthia took part in a 3.5-hour hands-on training session on raising beetles and snails alongside local residents.
  • At the end of the training, participants received a training diploma, as well as a document summarizing what they had learned during the course.
  • Finally, Cynthia visited the APREMA premises.

This practical training course completes the participative rehabilitation of hectares of mangrove, providing local residents with the keys to developing an alternative activity to mangrove timber harvesting, which is more sustainable and respects these wetlands.

At the end of the day, production equipment for these activities was also distributed to participants.
