Les Petites Cantines Romans-sur-Isère

Missions

Opening of a participatory and solidarity-based canteen in Romans-sur-Isère.

The association Les Petites Cantines Romans-sur-Isère has been selected as a laureate of the Fonds Transition 2024 by the Fondation setec!
Les Petites Cantines Romans-sur-Isère is an independent association that originated from the Les Petites Cantines Network.

The Les Petites Cantines Network

The Les Petites Cantines Network comprises 14 active canteens and 15 additional canteens in development across France, along with a national association responsible for supporting local canteens by identifying their needs, expertise, and necessary resources. Each Petite Cantine operates independently and is guided by a “talent developer” from the network.

The Core Values of Les Petites Cantines

  • Social impact to combat isolation and strengthen social bonds within a community.
  • Research partnerships.
  • Advocacy and communication efforts.
  • Expansion of new canteens.

The Les Petites Cantines community in France includes nearly 35 employees, about 20 civic service volunteers, and over 15,000 active members.

Les Petites Cantines Are

  • Participatory: Meals are an opportunity to meet people from various generations and walks of life. Everything is designed to encourage exchanges, foster connections, and restore a sense of social utility. Everyone pitches in—preparing the meal, cleaning, even washing dishes!
  • Based on open contribution: Each person contributes financially with the amount of their choice to cover costs, making it accessible to a wide audience. Les Petites Cantines transparently communicates the cost of a meal and its economic model.
  • Sustainable: Les Petites Cantines aims to care for both their guests and the planet. They prioritize sustainable food by focusing on local production, short supply chains, organic agriculture, reduced animal protein, collection of organic food surplus, and bulk purchasing.

Les Petites Cantines Romans-sur-Isère and the Project

This project aims to open a solidarity-based, participatory canteen in Romans-sur-Isère, France, with the goal of combating isolation and strengthening social bonds.

The Les Petites Cantines team in Romans-sur-Isère was formed in April 2023, and the local independent association was created in August of the same year. The next steps involved searching for a suitable location and raising funds, while organizing awareness events, such as pop-up canteens, to introduce the association to the community. This phase continued throughout 2024 with bi-monthly pop-up canteens, the development of local association activities, ongoing communication, volunteer engagement, and more.

The future canteen’s premises are ideally located in the heart of the city, comprising two adjacent rooms of 55m² each. In addition to hosting Les Petites Cantines activities, the space will offer co-working options and be ideal for organizing parties and events.

The association will pay rent, which the property owner has generously agreed to lower as a donation, thereby becoming a partner in the project.

To transform this space into the future canteen, renovation work will begin in March 2025, including volunteer-led projects for painting and furniture construction.

The canteen’s grand opening is scheduled for September 2025!

The Role of the Fondation setec

The Fondation setec is supporting this wonderful project with €20,000 toward the renovation of the premises.
