The Project
The Setec Foundation is renewing its partnership with the Nio Far association for the creation of a Plastic Waste Treatment Unit (PTU) in Senegal, in the commune of Diembering.
This project is distinct from the one initially supported by the Setec Foundation. More information about the previously supported project is available.
Objectives
The main objective of the project is to lay the cornerstone for the creation of a plastic treatment—and ultimately recycling—chain in the region, while enabling the professional integration of five women. It consists of three actions:
-
The eco-friendly construction of the modules that will make up the future PTU, which will be partially powered by photovoltaic panels;
-
The recruitment and training of the five women who will work at the unit;
-
An awareness campaign in local neighborhoods and schools, including the installation of dedicated plastic collection bins (“Plastic’Bac”).
The plastic processed will come from various collection sources:
-
Private collection from the CTD, the Kabrousse Waste Treatment Center, which has committed to supplying all its plastic to the PTU;
-
Public collection:
-
From the landfill managed by the town hall;
-
From sorting the collection of the Société d’Aménagement et de Promotion des Côtes et Zones Touristiques (SAPCO);
-
-
Nio Far collection (dedicated collectors).
The PTU will act as a hub to gather plastic from the area and process it; it will then be sold for recycling to major recyclers in Dakar or exported for PET. The association also plans to manufacture “fatboys” or garden cushions from PET flakes.
Incubation Phase Timeline
The project has been ongoing since November 2024 and will conclude in October 2025, the month of the PTU inauguration.
Final Impacts of the Project
The project will contribute to establishing a plastic recycling chain in the commune of Diembering, while enabling the recruitment and eventual training of 11 women. It also aims to raise awareness among 5,000 students, as well as municipal and regional employees, about environmental protection, proper waste disposal, and plastic recycling opportunities.
Finally, through the construction of the PTU, the Nio Far association seeks to promote a sustainable and economically viable business model based on recycling and sustainable development principles.
The Role of the Setec Foundation
The Setec Foundation is supporting this initiative with €25,137, with the involvement of Jules Houlet (Setec Energy Environment), project sponsor, who also contributes his expertise on several technical aspects that serve as a lever for project development.
